Chip giant Intel will say that both Conroe and Merom will both be known as Core 2 Duo when they launch in the third quarter.
But Woodcrest will not. Intel's top performing chip for desktops will be called Core 2 Extreme. Woodcrest is a server chip. It doesn't like being part of any brand. It is for the aficionados of microprocessors, however similar it is.
You've already had much of this information on the INQ about stuff, but Eric Kim, Intel's worldwide marketing manager, will say tomorrow that the Core 2s will be the "heart and soul" of computers bringing "magic" to digital lifestyles. Woodcrest could never do that, it is a server chip. It is a different breed, albeit with some similarities.
And we agree that it is fantastic that Intel has at last decided to drop the idea of CPUs as the brains of a computer. Even bumble bees have bigger brains than CPUs. Although their hearts are humbler.
And oddly enough, many insects have nervous systems that include their brain in a substantial paradigm shift.
Intel said it will make things easier for end users to understand. Poor souls. Poor brains.
